I've picked up a few facts, gestures, and vocabulary terms in the time I've been involved with Royal, my English marine commando. Between his "English English," my American, AND his lovely Bootneck slang, we made quite a pair in the beginning! I've put together a short list of terms I've learned:
Bootneck - Royal Marine Commando, as in "my boyfriend is a bootneck"
Chad - Awful, bad, as in "that is one chad pose"
Chuffed - Happy, excited, as in "they were well chuffed because they got in free"
Essence - Good looking, as in "look at him, he's essence"
Flash - Get angry, snap, as in "don't mention the cinema, he'll flash"
Gen - Seriously, genuinely, as in "no, gen, they love going to Southampton"
Hanging Out - Tired, exhausted, as in "I just got back from the gym and I'm hanging out"
Honkin - Gross, ugly, as in "that bin is honkin"
Hoofin - Better than good, awesome, as in "my girlfriend is hoofin"
Matelots - Navy blokes, as in "there goes that matelot"
Pants - awful, bad, as in "don't look at my drawing, it's pants"
Passed Out - When a Royal Marine graduates the 32 weeks of basic training, as in "I passed out with 10 other blokes"
Phot - Photograph, as in "let's take a look at those phots"
Red Pigs - Hot, humid, as in "it's red pigs today"
Threaders - Angry, mad, as in "my phone broke and I'm threaders"
Toppers - Full, as in "that photo album is going to be toppers with phots"
Waz - Great, awesome, as in "that restaurant's waz"
Yomp - March, hike, as in "we went yomping all over Devon today"
Yeah, and that's just a very short list. Plus, I'm learning more all the time!
Oh God, these are so true... I spend a LOT of time trying to decipher what my RM boyf is talking about!
