Nothin' new there except a great essay by an interesting author, Andrew Klavan.
"THERE HAS NEVER been an age without war, not ever. Mass violence is a continual aspect of the human condition. Peace, like good weather, is always local and temporary — and what is peace anyway but the result of past victories in war and the effective threat of future war against would-be aggressors?
We play with our children, read books, go to work and enjoy recreations only because people with guns stand ready, willing and able to kill other people with guns who would kill us if they could.
....
But these fighters do keep us safe. And because keeping us safe is harsh, dangerous work, we should glorify them, exalt them in story and song by way of appreciation."
Gosh, there are so many good points, take the time to read the whole thing (it's not long). Klavan mentions such movies as The Fighting Seabees, and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo as patriotic tributes and inspirations during World War II. And how we need, and our boys and girls fighting deserve, those types of movies now.
I would venture to add Back to Bataan, They Were Expendable, The Battle of Midway, and The Green Berets. Gee, most of those contain John Wayne. I just love that man...
As Jimmy Stewart said, "I can't imagine there's anyone in this country who doesn't know who he is. Kids will be talking about him long after the rest of us were gone. John will make the history books, as Will Rogers did, because he lived his life to reflect the ideals of his country."
We just need another actor like him. Anyone... anyone? No guts, eh.

There was only one thing my father liked as much as watching a football match and that was a John Wayne movie. And my step-son used to go round the house saying 'Get off your horse and drink your milk!'

:o) John Wayne has always been tradition in our house! I have at least 5 of his films on dvd, just bought Donovan's Reef for $4.88! Couldn't believe it.
