I've hung your stocking upon the wall
I've laid your presents under the tree
I've kept the card, the glitter ball
The star you made when you were three.
I've lit the candle you love to smell
I've dusted the book you read so well
I've hung the lanterns around the door
The ones you made when you were four.
I'm thinking back to Christmasses past
And of the time I saw you last
You've gone to war to help Iraq
But I can't wait until you're back.
And now as Christmas Day draws near
I miss the son I love so dear
With happy thoughts I write this poem
And count the days until you're home.
~ DAD Steven Maddison, 50, from Washington, Tyne and Wear, wrote a poem, My Little Soldier, to his son Gary, 22, who has been in Iraq since the start of November.
